I started playing clawhammer banjo more or less at random in summer of 2017 under Joel Stafford in San Francisco. It began with the realization that my music taste had happily and stealthily transitioned to a ton of banjo - modern or local people like Rob Stenson, Bela Fleck, Wes Corbett, Lukas Poole. They would become my gateway to the rich history of more traditional old time greats like Wade Ward, New Lost City Ramblers, Ola Belle Reed, Matokie Slaughter and many others before realizing I needed to pick up this vibrant instrument myself. I've largely focused on finding my own voice in that old time genre - while flirting intermittently with a little bluegrass as of 2019 to keep things spicy. I've been honored to perform at multiple renowned SF venues such as the fountain in front of the De Young Museum, that patch of grass in front of the Conservatory of Flowers in Golden Gate Park, and many a bench in the panhandle. Some of those performances were professionally recorded with an iphone leaning against a rock, and are available for viewing in the videos section.

Reasons for this site:

  • Create, not just consume. To give back - in my tiny way - to the local and digital banjo community that's given so much to me

  • Track my technical and stylistic progress over time

  • Make myself more visible to the broader music community in SF. Please contact me if you'd like to connect, jam or otherwise!
